I purposely did not even attempt to go to the gig of the decade.
I thought there may be too much memory and too many familiar people if I go to the reunion concert of the Eraserheads, and so I resigned that I probably won’t be able to go. And besides, I have a newspaper to finish.
And then there was the sad news when I walked into the newsroom this afternoon (it’s a Sunday and I don’t usually monitor news until after I am on the road to work)… Ely Buendia “collapsed” back stage after doing 15 songs.
It was like learning they were gonna break up all over again. The news had that kind of effect. I guess it’s befitting, the surge of emotions, I mean. After all, Eheads was the group that started it all. They were the music demi-gods of their generation. And like any other thing that happens to ‘gods,’ events such as hospitalizations, losses, breakups, nervous breakdowns tend to be magnified and fussed over by the mortals like me. We have to. For some twisted reason we like watching.
